It's a new year and a new chance to be a better person. A chance to lose weight, read more books, get better grades, spend more time with your children, and change the world in every conceivable way for the good. Or so they say.
My own 2019 started off quite normally. I woke up a couple of times in the middle of the night to help the three-year-old get back to sleep. I slept past my alarm and got out of bed slowly. I then made my wife and children crepes with many not terribly healthy toppings to choose from. I've been working on numerous projects throughout the day and, as far as I can remember, have not taken a shower or shaved (which is, believe me, not the norm).
Despite the relaxed nature of my first day of the year, I hardly feel like 2019 has been somehow ruined. Rather, I find the lines between years to be artificial. I resist the notion that I'm going to have a substantially easier time improving myself starting the very beginning of a year than turning my life around at 4:39 p.m. on Thursday, September 19.
Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with seizing on the new year to make yourself a better person. Let those 12:00 a.m. fireworks bang and sizzle just for you as you race off to fulfill that extra special resolution. It won't hurt to at least try.
However, our ability to decide to improve ourselves is much more wonderful when we realize that we can activate it at any moment on any day during any week in any month in any year of our existence. How unfortunate to procrastinate self-improvement until the circumstances are just right and every clock reading comes to a neat 00:00:00. I doubt successful people limit themselves to the perfect moment to create positive change.
So, no matter what moment in 2019 you find yourself in, may you find the courage to make whatever change for good you feel life is calling upon you to change.
